A Limestone County woman and NASA employee has been charged with having sex with a 14-year-old boy, the Athens E-News Courier reports.

According to the E-News Courier, Susan Loraine Whitfield, 49, of Harvest, was charged Wednesday with five counts of second-degree rape and one count of bribing a witness.

A former assistant principal at Pelham High School was arrested Thursday on charges she had sex with a male student.

Catherine Michelle Bell, 33, turned herself in to the Shelby County Jail about 2:45 p.m. She is charged with three counts of “School Employee Engaging in a Sex Act or Deviant Sexual Intercourse with a Student Under the Age of 19 years,” Shelby County Sheriff Chris Curry announced this afternoon.

A former Spain Park High School teacher was sentenced to probation this morning after pleading guilty to having sex with a student under the age of 19.

Stephanie Suggs Millard, 34, of north Shelby County, was sentenced by Shelby County Circuit Court Judge Dan Reeves to 10 years in prison. But the judge suspended the sentence and placed her on probation for five years.

The sentence was the result of a best interest plea agreement Millard entered with the Shelby County District Attorneys Office.

ABI’s Cyber Crime Unit on Nov. 20 carried out a search warrant at Blackwell’s Parsons Road home, according to Alabama state trooper spokesman Sgt. Steve Jarrett. He declined to elaborate on the accusations against Blackwell, saying only the crimes involve child exploitation and child abuse.

According to court records, ABI agents interviewed Blackwell during the raid. Asked if he ever had been sexually active with a child, he said, he “had done a little” with a 9-year-old boy and found it sexually arousing.

Blackwell, however, said he and the boy have had sexual encounters multiple times over the past year. He indicated it was consensual. He said he “never liked kids” but the victim grew on him and he “loves him to death.” Blackwell told investigators he feels the boy loves him as much.

The former high school teacher convicted on Friday of having sex with a 14-year-old student has issued a video apology in which she credits her faith for helping her through the ordeal.

Alicia Gray, 28, was sentenced to six months in jail and ordered to surrender her teaching certificate for engaging in a sexual act or deviant sexual intercourse with a student under 19 years old while teaching at Mary G. Montgomery High School in Semmes in 2013. She will also have to register as a sex offender.

Sylacauga Police have arrested a sixth-grade physical education teacher on sex crime charges.

Lt. Willis Whatley said Rodricus Arlester Thomas, 31, of Sylacauga, was arrested Sunday and charged with second degree rape, and school employee engaging in a sex act or deviant sexual intercourse with a student under the age of 19. He was taken to Talladega County Jail and bond was set at $20,000 for each charge.

A Hoover man arrested twice in five days on sex charges involving a minor child won’t be getting out of jail anytime soon, police said Thursday.

Bond for 32-year-old Jason Hankins is set at $6 million after U.S. Marshals took him into custody Wednesday night, just four days after he bonded out of the Shelby County Jail on similar charges.

Hankins worked at the Family Life Center at Shades Crest Baptist Church. He has resigned from that position. Church officials are not commenting on his arrests.

An Andalusia man was sentenced in federal court Friday to more than 16 years in prison for traveling to meet what he thought was a 14-year-old boy in April.

David Daniel Hicks, Jr., 42, of Andalusia, must serve 200 months in prison for the use of a facility of interstate commerce to entice a minor to engage in sexual activity, interstate travel for illicit sexual conduct, and production of child pornography, according to a U.S. Department of Justice press release.

Hicks was also sentenced to a lifetime term of supervised release after his incarceration;  to register as a sex offender; to complete sex offender treatment; to submit to monitoring of any computer or electronic accounts; to avoid unsupervised contact with children; and to inform future employers of his convictions.

A man who fled the country in 1998 before his child sex abuse trial was to begin was found guilty Friday afternoon of five sex abuse-related charges.

It took a Baldwin County jury about an hour to convict Giusseppe LoPorto, 80, of two counts of first-degree sexual abuse, two counts of first-degree sodomy and one count of first-degree rape.

LoPorto’s sentencing is set for January. He faces a one to 10-year sentence on each of the sexual abuse charges, 10 years to life on the sodomy charges and 10 years to life on the rape charge.
