A Florence couple was indicted last week on more than 100 charges related to exploiting a minor child in their custody to produce child pornography.

The charges against Patricia Allana Ayers, 34, and her husband, Matthew David Ayers, 42, were outlined in a 107-count indictment filed in U.S. District Court in Birmingham.

Investigators found the couple in possession of 53 pornographic images of the child produced between the summer of 2010 and January 2013.

Stephen Conrad was arrested in April 2013 on more than 100 counts of child sex abuse charges, but those counts were ultimately dropped by the D.A.’s Office after the now former Tallassee Assistant Police Chief was accused of evidence tampering and witness intimidation.

According to the investigator who testified about the case, Brandy Conrad admitted to abusing children and being present while child abuse was taking place. The details of the testimony are graphic and WSFA 12 News has made the decision not to report details regarding them.

Sooner or later the strange cases of Alabama teachers engaging in sexual behavior with their students was going to catch the attention of somebody with either a microphone, TV camera or web site outside Alabama.

And it has.

The Daily Caller recently posted the provocative version of a vintage Alabama greeting card – the one shown above. I received a number of emails from friends and educators I have known over the years cringing at the image and headline but also asking me to share it to show that in the www dot world we connect not just to ourselves but to many others outside our borders.

As you can read, the Washington-based web site used a slide show of the accused teachers to prove their contention that “Alabama is the teacher-student sex capital of the USA.”

The man who prosecutors say sexually assaulted a teenage schoolgirl on a shortcut home will have to come up with at least $10,000 cash to get out of jail, based on a judge’s ruling Monday.

Jermaine Young was arrested on April 11 and charged with first-degree rape stemming from the April 7 incident. Mobile police said, around 4:30 p.m. that afternoon, they found the 16-year-old girl after she escaped the attack.

Michaela was sheltered from the details, but according to her mother it was used three times in her bedroom and once in her bathroom.

Staten was a permanent substitute teacher for two years at ACA, and also worked with the football team as an assistant. He was also an alumni of the school.

Sewell says this has been difficult for the ACA family, “Just because of having known him, we certainly were surprised”, but calls this an isolated incident, based on the information gathered by the administration. School officials are currently cooperating with investigators and say they know very little about the evidence gathered at this point.

Child Protect is also participating in this investigation, carrying out the forensic interview with the alleged victim. According to the agency, preliminary evidence suggests Staten was the student’s substitute teacher.
