It took a jury about 10 minutes to convict George Cannon of sexually abusing an 8-year old girl a few years ago.

On Wednesday, Cannon, 63, of Opelika was found guilty of sexual abuse of a child under the age of 12 following two days of testimony, where the state contended that Cannon had inappropriately touched a girl while she and her brother spent the night at his home.

Following the verdict, Assistant District Attorney Clay Thomas said he appreciated Assistant District Attorney Gentry Jackson’s work in the case and was pleased the jury found Cannon guilty.

According to a federal complaint filed in the Southern District of Indiana, a Huntsville volunteer with Boy Scouts of America faces child pornography charges.

The complaint states James McCullars was part of an international child pornography ring. He is charged with engaging in a child exploitation enterprise and conspiracy to distribute and receive child pornography. Federal agents said members of his ring used the internet and U.S. Mail to discuss sexual interest in young boys and trade “substantial volumes” of child pornography.

According to the complaint, McCullars used the online identities “^dj” and “deejjaayy.” The complaint states another suspect in this case told investigators “^dj” worked for a college in Alabama, knew several people who produce child porn, and went camping with and molested minors.

The trial date for a Montgomery man accused of child sexual abuse is being pushed back until early next year.

Montgomery Circuit Court judge Charles Price ordered the trial for Andrew Bartels to begin on February 24, 2014. It was supposed to take place in late August of this year.

Bartels, 39, was arrested in October 2012 and later indicted on three counts of sexual abuse of a child less than 12 years of age.

Before a Dothan judge can determine whether the city’s personnel board acted appropriately in upholding the discipline of a police officer who made controversial Facebook posts, he must first determine the criteria he can consider to make his ruling.

Circuit Judge Butch Binford heard arguments Tuesday in the case of Dothan Police Cpl. Raemonica Carney, who was disciplined by Police Chief Greg Benton earlier this year after he was made aware of Facebook posts she made concerning Christopher Dorner, a former Los Angeles Police Department officer who is believed to have killed two officers and two others before being pursued to a California cabin where an exchange of gunfire occurred. A fire erupted in the cabin and Dorner died in the fire.

Wright allegedly met the teen from Harris County in an online chat room. The conversation then went to text messages, where sexually explicit messages were exchanged between Wright and the teen.

Wright allegedly picked up the teen and raped her. Authorities believe Wright dropped the teen back off at home when she walked through the door of a home at 7 a.m. on Monday. Deputies from the Harris County Department met with the girl, who told them she had a sexual encounter with an adult man.

Pike County residents were able to learn about the epidemic of bullying this Thursday night in Troy when the university held a town hall meeting followed by a vigil to raise bullying awareness.

The meeting took the form of a panel discussion and question-and-answer section in which Pike County residents were able to ask specific questions about bullying.

The panel was composed of Florence Mitchell, Greg Crosby, Sharon Sullivan, Brenda Lampley, Karena Valkyrie and Greg Price.

Price gave a presentation on cyber-bullying before the panel discussion. Price serves as the head of the Alabama Computer Forensics Institute, a group that aids law enforcement officials in technology related criminal cases. “We work an enormous volume of cases involving cyber-bullying and child predators,” Price said. “It is basically anywhere where technology and bad things intersect.”

In a mystery straddling two states, three men and a woman were found dead of shotgun blasts in north Alabama after two of them were targeted in a Tennessee child pornography investigation, police say.

It’s being called a triple murder-suicide pact, as it appears the shooter killed his sister, former brother-in-law and friend before turning the 12-gauge on himself.

It’s unclear why they were in Alabama and why two of the four chose to take part in the pact.
