Local authorities made at least a dozen arrests in the last year and a half on charges involving the alleged solicitation of children through the Internet or by other electronic means.

The offenses in some of the dozen criminal cases across Henry and Houston counties allegedly involve the use of either e-mail, social media accounts such as Facebook and/or cell phones to elicit unlawful activity with children.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) – A jury in Birmingham has returned a $1 million judgment against a former youth minister who was accused of sexual misconduct with a 15-year-old girl in the congregation.

The former youth minister of Word of Life Christian Center, William David Webb, pleaded guilty in 2009 to transporting a minor girl across state lines for sex. His is serving a 5-year sentence.

Lewis made his decision after hearing arguments last week from the prosecution and attorney Bill Kominos, who represented Gericke in court.

Records show Lewis reduced the bail with several conditions, which included he wear an electronic monitor to be paid for his own expense. Lewis also ordered Gericke to have no contact with anyone under the age of 19 other than immediate family members.

MUSCLE SHOALS, AL (WAFF) – Colbert County officials arrested a man after they said they found dozens of albums containing child pornography.

60-year-old Myron Joe Sizemore of Muscle Shoals was arrested Thursday and charged with possession of pornographic material.

Police said Sizemore was indicted in September after emergency responders found the pornography in his home on August 3.

Houston County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Tony Gonzalez said Friday that the 13-year-old student has been charged with making terroristic threats based on an investigation earlier this week.

Gonzalez said the arrest was related to statements made on Facebook. He said the student did not have a specific plan, nor did he have weapons.

According to a Dothan police statement, police arrested Christopher Scott Martin, 37, of Leesburg, Ga., and charged him with the class A felony crime of traveling to meet a child for a sex act.

PINSON, AL (WBRC) – The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office says that the 17-year-old son of a former daycare worker has been charged with sexually abusing multiple children.

Eric Lemont Higdon was arrested Aug. 31 and charged as an adult with sexual abuse of a child less than twelve years old and two counts of sodomy in the first degree with the victim being less than twelve years old.

MONTGOMERY, AL – Attorney General Luther Strange announced that a youth minister facing charges in Madison and Cullman counties for sex crimes against children is due to be sentenced on July 31 for similar crimes of  which he has been convicted in Elmore County.

John A. Astorga was found guilty on April 11 by a jury in Elmore County Circuit Court for two counts of first-degree sexual abuse. During the trial, evidence that was presented by the Attorney General’s Office that included the testimony of three separate victims as well as the pastor of Bethel Assembly of God in Wetumpka where Astorga had been employed.
