Local authorities made at least a dozen arrests in the last year and a half on charges involving the alleged solicitation of children through the Internet or by other electronic means.

The offenses in some of the dozen criminal cases across Henry and Houston counties allegedly involve the use of either e-mail, social media accounts such as Facebook and/or cell phones to elicit unlawful activity with children.

Marshall says the scammers are calling victims, posing as the Montgomery County Sheriff.  They threaten them with an arrest warrant, unless they send money.  Marshall says the mindset is easy to recognize,  “They instill fear in this people.  I don’t want to be arrested, so I better send money.”

Corporal Kenneth Gordon is investigating the so-called scam for the Sheriff’s Office.  Gordon puts it simply, “It’s a scam, it’s been a scam since the beginning.”

EHS Assistant Principal Ricky Britt said he participated in an internet safety course last summer that detailed laws and acts enacted in recent years to protect children when they’re online. As part of these measures, schools have been asked to help educate students about cyberbullying — using technology, often social media sites like Facebook, to publicly humiliate, harass or threaten someone.

“Cyberbullying in this day and time is getting to be worse,” Britt said. “A lot of the incidents are just not surfacing.”
